You can also get it by downloading programs that have spyware code embedded in them or opening an email from an unknown sender. The bottom line is that spyware can easily infest your computer if you frequently use the Internet.
Being careful when browsing the internet can prevent you from having spyware. To reduce the risk of getting spyware, you must have at least an anti-spyware installed or running can minimize this risk. There are a lot of anti-spyware software available out there, it can be purchased or downloaded for free, you must be careful when you download something for free for this has a large percentage of having spyware on them.
To have anti-spyware is very essential. Having an anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall software is not adequate enough. Not those software can detect and prevent spyware, not even the most advance firewall can stand a chance. There are some that adapts to any type of spywares, it is better to be safe than sorry.
