Firstly you will need either a PCI slot USB adapter card or if you are using a notebook you will need a USB PC card slot adapter. Some motherboards will come equipped with USB support and an add-on card, check your motherboard manual if this is the case.
1. Shut down and turn off the computer, make sure that the computer is unplugged for safety.
2. With a desktop computer (not laptop) remove the screws that hold the case together & open up your computer case.
3. Insert the PCI card adapter into your PCI slot, or PC card adapter into the laptop computer. Inserting the PC card adapter into the laptop PC card adapter slot is an easy process, it just slips into the side of your laptop computer. Inserting the PCI card into the PCI slot (of your desktop computer) can be a tricky process however & if you are not handy or technical in any way I would recommend that you don't try to do this. It is easier to get someone that knows what they are doing if you are not confident to go it alone. It is recommended that you use an anti static strap & mat when performing any form of computer repair or upgrade. The PCI adapter card will only go into your desktop motherboard one way – DO NOT try to force the adapter card as you may damage both the motherboard & the adapter. Take your time & if you have other PCI devices installed you will see how those adapter cards have been inserted.
4. Plug in your computer & boot up into your operating system.
5. You should be prompted for device drivers, insert the disk (if needed) that came with your USB adapter card , you may also be asked for your operating system disk/s. Follow the prompts & install the drivers as asked.
6. That's it! Now you can enjoy all those great USB devices with your new USB adapter card.
The same method of installation can be used for a: SCSI host adapter card, Com port adapter card, USB 1.1 & USB 2.0 adapter card, Firewire adapter card / IEEE 1394 adapter card, TV capture card adapter, Ethernet adapter card / Network adapter card, Graphic card adapter, Sound card adapters.
