There are a variety of things that you can try to do to fix any Windows registry problems you might be encountering, the problem is that some of the things you might do could be just as dangerous to your computer's health as the registry issue itself. Just so that you can be aware of what you're getting into, here's a list of the various things you might do to fix your Windows registry problems.
*Do it yourself
If you know what you're doing and have all the information you need, you can actually go into the Windows registry editor and fix it yourself. While this might be tempting, especially if you are fairly good at computers, it can also be a bad idea. Making changes to the Windows registry is as easy as making changes to a Word document: click save and your changes are done! This means if you change something you shouldn't, you can very quickly and easily create more registry problems than you fix.
Sometimes, the error message you get when you discover your computer has a registry error tells you the name of the program or the process. Once you have that, you can attempt to find the entry in the registry that's causing the problem. But first, of course, you have to access the registry.
To accomplish this goal, you must first know how to open the registry. It's really a lot easier to do than you would think. First of all, you will need to go to the start menu in the lower left-hand corner, open up run, and type "regedit" in the dialogue box. Once you have done this it will engage the registry editor to allow you to make the necessary edits. However, you could find yourself in an even more problematic situation if you change the wrong registry item. Even if you fix the original problem you could still find that you changed the wrong thing in the process, and this could easily leave your Windows registry in worse shape than it was before.
*Get a computer person to do it for you
No, not a professional, but a friend. Call your cousin Joe who graduated college with a degree in computer science. Go chat up your neighbor who does computer programming for a living. You might think these people will be much more capable of fixing your Windows registry. However, you have to be careful here, too. The Windows registry is a piece of software that few people deal with on a regular basis, even people who use computers all the time. In fact, these people may be only too ready to start experimenting on your computer so they don't risk their own!
Of course, this isn't always true. You might know someone who knows their way around the Windows registry and can fix just about any problem in a few minutes. If you trust your local computer guru, don't hesitate to call them in. In fact, it might not be a bad idea to get their advice on what Windows registry repair tool you need to download. chances are, they've tried out a few different ones and know which works well and which doesn't.
*Download a Windows registry scanner
If you don't feel comfortable changing registry values yourself (and few people do) and you don't know or don't want to call in a friend, you'll want to download a Windows registry repair tool. In fact, it's a good idea to at least get a registry scanner and scan your computer for issues. More than likely, a Windows registry tool will find many more issues than just the one you're going after.
The best way for you to find out what Windows registry fixer is the best one for you to use is probably relying on knowledgeable friends and family who may have encountered this problem before or you can go to online research tools like ours. The most important thing that you will need to look for in a repair tool is one that properly scans, repairs, compacts, and backs up the registry.
